Woodbridge is a vast residential area or community in the city of Vaughan, north of Toronto. It was an independent town, but not before it was amalgamated with nearby districts in the year 1971.
In 1855, Woodbridge was named after a wooden bridge crossing the Humber River which serves as the city’s entry point. A replica model of the bridge was then made in 1930. It was made of concrete and was near the original location. The bridge was later on rebuilt in 2016 and is now made of metal.
Before suburban communities sprawled, Woodbridge was mainly farmland. Today, most areas are residential with commercial and industrial properties. In 2000, there was an increase in condominiums and apartment buildings in the city.
A variety of restaurants, shops and businesses can be found in Market Lane Shopping Center. Despite this suburbanization, Woodbridge is home to two natural conservation areas namely Boyd Conservation Area and Kortright Centre for Conservation.
Other notable establishments/places include:
– Memorial Hill
– Pierre Berton Library
– Doctors McLean District Park
– Rainbow Creek Park
– Maxey Park
– Woodbridge is considered to be the center of the street racing community in the Greater Toronto Area.
– A tornado struck Woodbridge on August 2009 ripping houses and damaging buildings.
The city is home to a large number of Italian-Canadian population. Although that’s the case, Woodbridge’s population was observed to have been increased over the years from different nations worldwide.
