About Leslieville

Leslieville is a neighborhood in Toronto which began as a small village around the Toronto Nurseries in the 1850’s. It was named after George Leslie and his Sons. It is now mostly characterized by cozy houses, tree lined streets and old-fashioned stores.

Original settlers were mostly gardeners or worked at one of the brick-making factories. Metal processing, tanning and other industrial activities used to dominate the area causing massive land contamination and air pollution.

However, a massive fire of the then A.R. Clarke Tannery in 2000 resulted into these industrial areas being abandoned. After the tragedy and with the reduction of air pollution, Leslieville started attracting an influx of middle-class homeowners due to its affordable housing. Massive gentrification was then seen in between year 2000 and 2010. Cafes, restaurants and shops also started emerging in the area.

Notable landmarks include:

– Ashbridge Estate
– Maple Leaf Forever Park
– Pape Avenue Cemetery, the first Jewish cemetery in the city of Toronto
– Gerrard India Bazaar knows as “Little India”

Some other interesting facts about Leslieville:

– Ashbridges Bay Wastewater Treatment Plant is considered the largest sewage treatment plant in the country.
– Sunlight Park was the first baseball stadium in Toronto.
– The composer of Maple Leaf Forever, Alexander Muir, was the first principal of the Leslieville Public School.
– Was once dubbed by the NY Times as the next Williamsburg

If you’re looking to spend a quiet time outside the city, Leslieville is your next best choice.
